The Professed Order and the Third Order

The Community of Opus Apostolorum is founded as Society of the Church. Its purpose is for members to reach out as more than just lay people in this hurting world, under the guidance and protection of our Sorrowful Mother. Works of love and mercy, such as Our Mother displayed on her visit to S. Elizabeth, are the foundation of the organization. Visiting, assisting and praying with the sick, elderly or homebound or those otherwise in need of a helping hand; serving as Eucharistic Ministers or as directed by the Parish ministries to which the member belongs.

The Community is an organization whose purpose is not just ministry but is first a way of life that draws the Sister into a deeper union with Jesus through Mary. It is not a commitment to be made lightly, but is in fact a special call from God to a religious life lived in the world.

Membership
Membership is open to Catholic women, age 21 or older. Members may be either single or married, and may have children. If married, the member’s spouse must be in agreement with their acceptance of the Rule of Life, and be supportive of her call as part of the Third Order Lay Sisters. It is strongly recommended that, if married, her husband daily share a time of daily common prayer (recitation of the Office, the Rosary, etc) to keep the marital bonds strong. Including the children in family devotional activities is strongly encouraged, when they are of an age to participate.

Women who join the Professed Community of Our Lady of Sorrows follow a Rule of Life, and each member must have a period of probation before becoming a professed Sister. The formation period is a minimum period of two years of discernment and formation, consisting of a period of postulancy of at least one year and a period of novitiate of at least one year, before application for Life Profession may be made. A period of Pre-Postulancy may also be required, depending on the candidate's life circumstance

The Third Order Community meets together once a month for instruction, on the First Saturday, as well as weekly time of Community Prayer, regular retreats and special Community days. Other days of instruction may also be added at the discretion of the superior.

If you feel you may be called by God and His holy Mother to a life as a Sister of the Community of Opus Apostolorum, please contact our Mother Prioress, for more information. We also welcome inquiries from parishes who wish to establish a chapter of the Community in their location.
